Open Space Committee
The Open Space Committee is an advisory group that researches appropriate opportunities for protecting land from development in the Town of Westminster. Members are appointed by Selectmen for three-year terms. Land is sought for protection for a number of reasons, including: when it connects existing greenways and wildlife habitat areas; when it contains sensitive watershed resources; when it encompasses rare or endangered species and their environments; and, if it is more valuable if left undeveloped, as for passive recreation, nature study and enjoyment. The OSC is charged with promoting and completing the land-protection goals that are outlined in the town’s Master Plan and Open Space & Recreation Plan. The group works with area land protection organizations such as the North County Land Trust to secure grant monies for the purchase of land to be owned by the town as well as conservation restrictions (CRs) and agricultural protection restrictions (APRs) on privately-held acreage.
